My Story

On November 11th, 2004, I experienced a severe epileptic seizure resulting in a fall from a height of 6 feet, which caused a traumatic spinal cord injury. This injury left me paralyzed from the chest down, confined to using a power wheelchair. I spent three and a half months in the critical care unit on a ventilator and faced a prognosis of only a 20% chance of survival. Despite being unable to speak initially, I communicated my determination to breathe independently within 10 days—and remarkably, I achieved this milestone.

This pivotal event demonstrated the strength of my mind and, combined with the limited mental health care I received, inspired me to help others in similar life-changing situations. After nearly six months in the hospital and an additional six months in inpatient rehabilitation, I moved into my own apartment on September 5th, 2005. Although the journey was challenging and marked by dark moments, I focused on my solid support system and the opportunities ahead. Following two years of outpatient rehabilitation, I successfully attained three post-secondary degrees, culminating in a master’s degree in psychology.
